Break through

Dancing the Viennese Waltz to Edith Piaf's Padam Padam was the beginning; it is where we become the best versions of ourselves as competitive dancers, according to Phandeluys and her partner, as they danced extemporaneously to the song.

Lately and pre-competition, they have had the students improvised many of our dance patterns at a moment's notice based on the unexpected tracks they played. We have had to rely on our knowledge, muscle memory, and wits …

Tonight, I was keen to show off my abilities with presence and confidence … especially as I was leading Phandeluys through some of the more advanced Gold level patterns of the International Standard dances … and she responded with military precision to my timing and leading.

I can still see that lingering smile on her face —pure surprise and happiness—drifting over my mind's eye like leaves on the wind … not only was she open to me reading her but she seemed comfortable, too.

Tonight was beautiful and poetic … as if it could be anything but.

as a nonimmigrant F-1 student, he had willfully operated an international students recruiting business without prior work authorization from the then United States Immigration and Naturalization Service; 

as President of said business, he had knowingly helped both mainland Chinese and Taiwanese students to evade military drafts in their countries by facilitating their applications to study in the US and abroad; 

as President of said business, he had knowingly helped both mainland Chinese and Taiwanese students looking to enter the United States with the intention of gaining permanent US resident status under the pretense of studying; 

as President of said business, he had purposely evaded paying taxes on the commissions received from it and failed to report the earned income to the IRS by having the payments wired back to Taiwan to his mother Chang Hsueh; 

he had applied for reinstatement of his F-1 or student status and a change of status, while knowingly withheld the preceding facts on his own applications for permanent resident and citizenship in the United States. 

And those are just the tip of the iceberg.
 
Ya-Chang Robert Lin had been employed at AAFES or The Exchange headquarter in Dallas, Texas as an information technology auditor, where he managed to steal—by downloading to CDs that he kept in his personal possession while abiding for time and opportunities to "do business" in Taiwan and/or China—thousands of his colleagues’ Social Security numbers and personnel files while working on one of its HR projects. The HR data on one of these projects became the basis for an academic paper, speaking proposal for ISACA, and a consulting business he was "collaborating with " [more like conning other people into developing and fronting for him]. 

Ya-Chang Robert Lin is a reprobate with a seared conscience. Lacking normal capacity for empathy, remorse, and reciprocation of good will, he is addicted to lying, cheating, and stealing for the pure pleasures derived from being able to get away with it. Because he is such a good liar—so charming and well versed in manipulation techniques and acting skills—it is hard to distinguish him from reprobates. 

Ya-Chang Robert Lin was able to dupe some of the smart people in federal government [AAFES or The Exchange, USCIS, ICE, and DHS], higher education [Fort Hays State University and Navarro College], and information technology auditing and security [ISACA and ACFE]. Among his legacy: A son who refused any connection with him and wished that he were dead.

I am off to get a gift before joining a party celebrating Phandeluys getting her certifications earlier this week; then evening classes at the studio for the pre-competition critique and practice sessions for American Rhythm and International Standard, Silver Syllabi.

Below is a snippet from Phandeluys's e-journals from which I had been reading off-and-on between interacting with her one-on-one.

What is the standard by which you evaluate a potential life partner?

Chang Hsueh's summary of a good man: He is a good man if he willingly goes out to work and brings home the money to cover the basic necessities.

My Asian almond eyes must have shown a mixture of intense sadness and hatred, staring at my mother-in-law.

As if I was buying a water buffalo to till borrowed land from a village landlord instead of marrying a partner for life. Indeed, what more can I possibly ask for, she told me. Beyond food, clothing, shelter, and transportation? Since we are talking about the basics on the physical level, let us add emergency savings and paying all the bills, including debts …

Requesting a road-map for the five planes of living is probably beyond both my husband's and my mother-in-law's mental comprehension and planning capacity, but a life-long strategy that provides a compass-point toward which one marches for present stability and future prosperity is a basic skill I was raised to expect of a functioning adult. Failing that, there is no point in donning dress-up clothes and playing house.

Knowing my mother-in-law's criteria for what she considers a good man, I am releasing myself from the daily and fruitless struggles of wrestling him away from his total lack of honor, responsibility, morals, and values … Best to redirect that energy into self-respect and self-care instead of wasting my time playing armchair psychologist.

Now, I understand why she thought she was modelling good mothering principles and behaviors when she stood outside our closed master bedroom door every morning, yelling out his name, like a rooster crowing at the break of dawn, to wake him up for work. She thought she was doing her duties as his mother; I was thinking how this bitch failed both herself and him as his mother. All I wanted was to shout at her to shut the fuck up and that she has done enough damage.

I married thinking we were all adults. I was wrong.

There is little future in my life as it stands … nor should I grieve … my son's emotional, psychological, mental, and physical happiness, well-being, and freedom away from that family and their influence is what I must focus on.

Not what you expect

For Mother's Day, I gifted Phandeluys her all-time favorite:  books! All 365-days' worth of books in Amazon gift cards. Given that she averages 3 books each week, it should keep my friend happily and voraciously reading for the next six months at least.

Not only does my partner want to live life to the fullest every second, she also feels the need to leave her special mark on the world she lives in. I suppose she can't help it—believing in possibilities and solutions is a persistent characteristic of her makeup—and fills every day with unexpected pleasures and new discoveries. Those great projects we've been working on for a while are taking shape the way we envision them, including the reformulation and consolidation of our dancesport business model. Yet, it is a little too soon to ponder whether we may want to retain and build upon this dancesport enterprise, to franchise it, or to sell it.

Not to say that we'll stop dancing, experimenting, choreographing and competing but it would be nice to not feel so buried under all that admin …

Quick Update | Cherry Blossoms in DC

Phandeluys and her partner are extending their stay in DC until the end of the month to experience and capture the second blooming of the Cherry Blossoms … I miss her—and the amazing couple that is them—terribly … I miss seeing her twinkling with happiness … I miss being in their presence and laughing it up over days-old memories and private jokes as we celebrate a new era in our friendship.

Meanwhile I am following and reading her son’s writing that lampoons his childhood and life with Ya-Chang Robert Lin, a “Taiwanese pseudo-father and a member of both the Fraud Institute and ISACA yet ironically commits fraudulent acts almost all the time that my mother and I had known him.”
