Maneuver without the artful handling

Would you dare renege on a payment contract for legal services already rendered by your legal adviser?  Is that even a smart move against a potential professional alliance?  Like I wrote before, am now finding out things about my spouse of 16 years that leave little room for breathing and doubting.
