Which is which?

Are these photos that of an adult male who was forced to remain in a relationship out of pity for a female who threatened to hurt herself should he try and break up with her [which is what my spouse had claimed about the relationship with his ex, Ming-Jung Li]?  Or does he look happy and contented, and they seem quite domestic?
